Can&#8217;t think of anything to add on this.<\/p>\n<p>But I would like to highlight this statement in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/07\/opinion\/andrew-m-cuomo-fast-food-workers-deserve-a-raise.html\">Cuomo op-ed Attewell cites<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2770\">Fast-food workers and their families are twice as likely to receive public assistance compared with other working families. Among fast-food workers nationwide, 52 percent \u2014 a rate higher than in any other industry \u2014 have at least one family member on welfare.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2770\">Yes, US taxpayers support fast food workers with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/clareoconnor\/2013\/10\/16\/reports-fast-food-companies-outsource-7-billion-in-annual-labor-costs-to-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\">$7 billion in public assistance every year<\/a> while the industry generates huge profits and generous CEO salaries. \u00a0And it&#8217;s not just the fast food industry. \u00a0Retail giants like Wal-Mart generate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/walton-1\/\">huge fortunes for small groups of people<\/a>\u00a0while taxpayers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/clareoconnor\/2014\/04\/15\/report-walmart-workers-cost-taxpayers-6-2-billion-in-public-assistance\/\">subsidize their wages to the tune of billions of dollars<\/a>. \u00a0Fast food and retail CEOs take multi-million dollar salaries, and wealthy families and stockholders take billions in profits while their workers live in poverty and taxpayers subsidize their business models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2770\">These CEOs and shareholders will argue that paying higher wages would cut into profits and force them to raise prices. \u00a0But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cps\/minwage2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">BLS statistics show about 3.3 million workers making the minimum wage or less<\/a>. \u00a0Paying them all $15 an hour, plus employer contributions for Social Security and Medicare, comes to less than $110 billion a year. \u00a0This is not the total cost of <strong>increasing<\/strong> the minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 &#8211; this is the total cost of <strong>paying all current minimum wage workers $15 an hour, 40 hours a week, for 50 weeks each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2770\">This is less than 1.5% of all <a href=\"https:\/\/research.stlouisfed.org\/fred2\/series\/CP\" target=\"_blank\">US corporate <strong>after tax<\/strong> profits<\/a> in 2014. \u00a0This means that Corporate America could pay a $15 minimum wage to all current minimum wage or below workers &#8211; and still generate more than $7 trillion in profits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"263\" data-total-count=\"2770\">Why don&#8217;t they do this?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steven Attewell, over at Lawyers, Guns and Money, gives a pretty good rundown of the politics behind Mario Cuomo&#8217;s call for increasing the minimum wage for some workers in New York City.
